The Stories That Remain:

An evening of storytelling exploring aging, memory, and the stories that shape us

September 22 | 5:30–9:00 p.m.

Forgotten Star Brewing, Fridley, Minnesota

Expect to laugh, cry, sing, and maybe even hear an accordion.

Join Rakhma Homes for an evening of live storytelling, music, humor, and reflection featuring Jonathan Goldstein, Kevin Kling, Dan Chouinard, and storytellers from the Rakhma community.

This year’s theme, The Stories That Remain, explores the stories that continue to shape us as we age: the people, places, identities, and experiences we carry with us, even as life changes.

Jonathan Goldstein is the creator and host of Heavyweight, one of the most acclaimed storytelling podcasts of the past decade. A former producer and longtime contributor to This American Life and creator of CBC Radio’s WireTap, Goldstein is known for stories that revisit unresolved moments from the past with humor, curiosity, and deep empathy. Heavyweight was named The Atlantic’s #1 podcast of 2016 and has been recognized by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Economist, and The Guardian.

Adding to the evening, Jonathan will record his story live for a future episode of Heavyweight.

Returning after last year’s amazing event are beloved Minnesota storyteller Kevin Kling and musician Dan Chouinard. Kling’s heartfelt and hilarious stories have been heard on NPR’s All Things Considered and stages across the country. Chouinard, a longtime collaborator with Kling, has performed everywhere from the Dakota to A Prairie Home Companion. Together, they bring humor, song, and a genuine warmth to the stage.

They’ll be joined by a handful of Rakhma storytellers sharing personal stories about their journeys with dementia.

This event is FREE for children 18 years and younger. Price of admission includes a free drink ticket and appetizers. Additional food will be available for purchase from Forgotten Star Brewing's food truck throughout the evening.

Proceeds benefit Rakhma Homes, a Minnesota nonprofit providing care for people living with memory loss since 1984.

Kevin Kling is part funny guy, part poet and playwright, part wise man — homegrown Minnesota meets Dante and Shakespeare.

Meet our Performers!

Kevin Kling is a Minnesota-based storyteller known for blending heartfelt and hilarious stories, shared on NPR’s All Things Considered and on stages from the Guthrie Theater to the National Storytelling Festival.

We’re thrilled to welcome Kevin Kling back to the stage at Rakhma’s fundraiser, The Stories That Remain, on September 22.

If you’d like to catch more of Kevin’s work before then, Unraveled runs from September 10-20th at Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis. In Unraveled, Kevin takes audiences through stories from his own life, from childhood adventures and family experiences to living with a congenital disability and recovering from the motorcycle accident that changed his life.

Kevin has a incredible way of combining humor, meaning, and connection in the stories we carry with us. We can’t wait to hear what he brings to The Stories That Remain.

When Dan Chouinard puts on a show, you just go, and don’t worry too much about what to call it.
— Eric Ringham, MPR

Dan Chouinard is a pianist, accordionist, and singer who has performed everywhere from the Dakota Jazz Club to A Prairie Home Companion, known for his warm and inviting style.

On GarrisonKeillor.com, he is described as “a St. Paul-based honky-tonk pianist, concert soloist and accompanist, street accordionist, sing-along enabler, Italian and French teacher, and bicycling vagabond. He’s been writer and host of a number of live history-with-music shows broadcast on Minnesota Public Radio and Twin Cities Public Television.”

We are excited to welcome Dan back again for our second annual storytelling fundraiser.

With gumption, empathy, and comic awkwardness, [Jonathan] ventures into people’s lives and tries to help them resolve things from the past: an unsolved human mystery, lingering guilt, a falling-out, hurt that’s turned to grievance.
